Minister Announces Funding for Young Immigrant Women Leadership Program

The Honurable Minister Peter Mackay was at Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia on Thursday, January 9, to announcement funding awarded through the Status of Women for the Young Women’s Leadership Project. The announcement also included funding for the HeartWood Centre for Community Youth Development for their Taking the Lead girl’s leadership project.

The Young Immigrant Women’s Leadership Project at Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia is a two year project funded by Status of Women Canada. The project supports young immigrant women in Halifax to develop leadership skills and contribute to the community for positive change.

15 young immigrant women are participating in the project to build their leadership roles in the community, they:

  • Came here as refugees
  • Are between the ages of 18 – 25
  • Have been living here between 2 – 10 years
  • Can communicate well in English

Program Activities

  • Leadership training sessions
  • Individual coaching and mentorship building activities
  • Community Needs Assessment and small projects
  • Youth Forum

We are looking for community mentors who can support the young immigrant women in different capacities, such as community network building, sharing specific knowledge and experiences and leadership development.
